Distinguished and Famous people from Lismore
🖼️ Margaret Olley
Painter Margaret Olley was born in Lismore in 1923 and became known for richly coloured still lifes and interiors. She was also a memorable subject for other artists: William Dobell’s portrait of her won the 1948 Archibald Prize, the same year her first solo exhibition sold out. Her own long career continued through decades of exhibitions, while the Margaret Hannah Olley Art Trust helped public institutions acquire works. Lismore’s connection is her birthplace, preceding study and professional life elsewhere. Her legacy includes both the paintings she made and the collections she helped other people build.
📚 Adam Gilchrist
Adam Gilchrist spent formative years in the Lismore region and attended school in Goonellabah. He went on to combine wicketkeeping with unusually aggressive batting at the highest level, helping redefine expectations of the role. His Australian career included three consecutive World Cup-winning teams in 1999, 2003 and 2007. Lismore later honoured the association with a pavilion at its regional sporting hub. The local cricket pathway forms an early chapter in a career whose later teams took him across Australia and the world.
🐎 William Leslie Robinson
William Leslie Robinson went to live at Goolmangar after his mother died and developed the horsemanship that shaped much of his working life. Coach driving at Keerrong and Goolmangar preceded a long police career, while boxing and painting supplied further outlets for his abilities. His later artwork was admired for its vivid colour and distinctive perspective. The Lismore district’s connection is actual childhood residence and employment, rather than a painting of a landmark being treated as proof of a home there. Those early years with horses supplied a practical foundation for the tracker and trainer he became.
